NOTES: Thomas was born and living in Acquackanonk and Anneke was born at Bergen
and living at Hackensack at the time of their marriage. They settled
near Cedar Grove, at the headwaters of the Peckamin River, in Essex Co.,
NJ, on the portion of Garret Mountain tract given to him by his father's
will. His allotment was described in subsequent deeds as "the
southwesterly corner of the Acquackanonk mountain land". It included at
least part, if not all, of the Cedar Grove mill sites. He was chosen
one of the constables of Essex County in 1723. In 1743 he bought a
tract of 727 acres east of the Bog and Vly, and deed one-third of it to
his son Golyn in 1748, and one-third of each of his sons Abraham and
John, all of whom settled on these tracts in Jacksonville, northeast of
Towaco valley.

Notes: Cornelis settled in Morris County, NJ, a mile or two from the
present Montville, on a large farm, probably purchased for him by
his father. On this land his descendants located, and in time they
became so numerous that the neighborhood came to be generally known
as Doremus Town (it is now called White Hall). Cornelis was on
friendly terms with the Indians, who were numerous in that region
when he first settled there. He and Antje became members of the
Reforemd Dutch Church at Pompton Plains, Morris Co., NJ, 17 June
1739. The will of Cornelius Doremus, of Pequanack, Morris County,
was dated 17 Feb. 1791, proved 4 Apr. 1803, and witnessed by Isaac
Haulenbeck, Peter Ackerman, and Gerrit Haulenbeck. In it he devised
to his "eldest son Henry twenty shillings in consideration of being
my oldest son; also all my land and real estate where I now live;"
50 acres of Bacchus (Bocker?) creek to be sold and the proceeds
divided amongst all his children. His wife, Ann Doremus, to be
comfortably and conveniently maintained by his son John. Executors
were his sons Henry and John. His personal estate was appriased at
$419.58½.
Children: 1. HENDRICUS DOREMUS, was b. 19 Feb. 1739 at Wechauw, Morris Co.,
NJ. On 25 Sept. 1760 he mar. MARREGRIETJE VAN WINKEL, who was
a dau. of Simon Van Winkel (of the White House, at the foot of
Willis Street). They were both from Morris Co.. By trade,
Henry was a tanner and currier. It is said he learned his trade
from Simeon Van Winkel, whose dau. he married. He plied his
trade on his father's farm, at the Wechauw, in the Towaco
Valley, less than two miles east of Montville. This valley in
early days was referred to as Te Wechauw, and later acquired the
name of Doremustown from this family, with numerous offspring,
who settled here in the first half of the eighteenth century.
The name was later changed to White Hall, where Henry had built
an unpretentious house. There was no hallway, since the outside
doors opened directly into each of the two main rooms. The
house stood on the north side of the road to Boonton, a mile
west of Towaco village and east of the railway crossing. His
descendants recalled that George Washington had his headquarters
for a time in the east room of the ground floor and entertained
his French officers in the orchard. This is the house marked
Henry Doremus on Erskine's Revolutionary map. Near the end of
the Revolution, he sold out, and on 12 July 1782 he bought one
of the Cadmus farms at Slotterdam, as short distance below the
Wesel bridge. As an instance of the simple trust that existed
in those days between men, it is related that the purchase of
this farm was made, and the price paid by installments extending
over a period of years, without so much as the scratch of a pen
between buyer and seller. He lived in a stone house, then some
distance from the river; the ruins are still visible between the
present road and the river. He continued to follow his
occupation as a tanner and currier, and also sold leather.
Henry died 10 Feb. 1817; his widow died 2 Apr. 1829, aged 91
years, 1 month, and 11 days, and both were buried in the family
burying ground, on the Wesel road. Henry's will was written 7
Feb. 1814, witnessed by Richard Outwater, Albert Ackerman, and
John Ackerman, and proved 9 Apr. 1817. He devised to his son
Peter "all my plantation and farm I now dwell upon from the
Passaic River, extending easterly the full breadth of my land
between Andrew Cadmus and Thomas Cadmus, to the line of Henry
Van Giesen, containing 150 acres;" to son Cornelius, $10 "as a
birthright;" the residue of the estate to his wife and his
remaining seven children, and his grandchildren Jiles Bartholf,
son of his deceased son Henry. Executors were sons Cornelius
and Peter.

Dec. 1790, was witnessed by John Dehart, John Dey, his brother-
in-law, and Simeon Doremus. He gave to his wife during her
widowhood, "this house where in I now dwell with all the
furniture and the lands and tenements that lie about it and
after her death or remarriage, I give to my son Cornelius the
sum of £30 current New Jersey money to be paid by my son
