NOTES: At 10:00 A.M. on 30 August 1947, Robert and Margaret were married in
St. John the Evangelist's Church, Rochester, NY, in the presence of John
H. Hess (Robert's best friend) and Mary V. Hefner (her sister) with the
Rev. Bernard V. Kuchman (Robert's cousin) and Rev. Amman officiating.
They honeymooned in Washington, D.C. and stayed at the Mayflower Hotel.
It was snowing on the day Robert was born and his sister, Ceil, had to
go out in the storm and get the midwife living on Joseph Avenue
(Rochester, NY). Robert grew up in 58 Weaver St. in Rochester, and
would much rather be out playing ball than sitting in a classroom. His
mother used to have him carry out the ashes from the coal furnace,
clean up the droppings from the pear tree in the back yard, remove ants
from her peonies, and collect rent from the various rental properties
that she had - all of which he disliked doing. He started working at
Eastman Kodak in 1 February 1943 and shortly after that was drafted into
the Navy. After basic training at Sampson, he was assigned to the
U.S.S. Rhind as a member of the Armed Guard. After his honorable
discharge he went back to work for Eastman Kodak and worked for a total
of 41 years in their Synthetic Chemical Division. He retired in 1985
and spent his retirement working around the yard, refinishing woodwork
in his home, and golfing which was his participation sport of choice.
He was also an avid hockey fan. He died of hepatic failure due to
pancreatic carcinoma on 1 July 1994 (at about 9:15 A.M.) at Rochester
General Hospital. A mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Margaret
Mary's Church in Rochester on 6 July 1995 with burial in Holy Trinity
Cemetery in Webster, New York. His funeral and burial was delayed
several days due to the Fourth of July celebrations near the funeral
home where he was laid out.
Margaret was the only child born outside the home and was delivered in
Highland Hospital. She used to spend much of her summer at her
grandfather Fred Hefner's farm in Webster, NY. These times seemed to be
the highlight of her youth as she fondly remembers those time even
today. She had many adventures on the farm and used to reach out her
bedroom window to pick fruit off a nearby plum tree. While on the farm
she was attacked by a swarm of bees and had to be rescued by her
grandfather who threw her and himself in a mud puddle to stop the
attack. She also learned to take a dislike to eating chicken for a
period of time when she went to visit her grandparents and found that
her pet chicken, Henrietta, was the main course for Sunday dinner. One
time she was the winner in an apple peeling contest and won a ton of
coal as the prize (which she traded with with father for a quarter).
She attended St. John the Evangelist Grammer School and East High School
where her hand writing abilities won her awards. She worked at
Stromberg Carlson for 13.5 years until 1957 when she quit to become a
full time mother. In her spare time she has worked elections for the
Democratic party and relaxes by enjoying crocheting and doing crossword
puzzles.
