NOTES: A newspaper article (origin unknown) described the wedding of Fred and
Cornelia:
"West Webster, April 21, 1890. A very pleasant affair took place
at the residence of Horace Hames, last Wednesday night, the
occasion being the marriage of his daughter, Caroline [sic], to
Fred Hefner. We had had the pleasure of attending similar parties,
but this seemed to be an improvement upon all previous occasions.
About fifty guests were gathered to witness the ceremony. A
beautiful arch of flowers had been prepared under which the young
couple stood while the Rev. D.D. Brown, the Baptist clergyman from
Webster, joined them in holy matrimony; after which the guests were
feasted on meats, cakes, ice cream, and other good things. Mr. and
Mrs. Hefner received many useful and valuable presents. The newly
married couple have the good wishes of many friends as they enter
upon life's road together. (Married Wednesday evening, April 16,
1890, at 8:00 o'clock)."
About 1908 at Corpus Christi Church, Rochester, NY, Fred married as his
second wife MARY W. GALLAGHER, who was born in 1867. Mary died in
1943 and was buried in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Webster, NY

Notes: Frederick entered the service at Buffalo, NY on 18 Apr. 1917 in the
U.S. Marine Corps assigned to Parris Island, SC. He claimed that he
was "22 years old" at the time. He was transferred to 47th Company,
5th Regiment, Philadelphia, PA, on 8 June 1917. He served overseas
from 27 June 1917 to 25 July 1919. He saw action at the Toulon
Sector, the Aisne Defensive; Chateau-Thierry;, the Aisen-Marne
Offensive, Soissons; and the Marbache Sector. He also served with
the army of occupation. He was transferred to Quantico, VA on 9
Aug. 1919 and discharged on Aug. 13, 1919. As the story goes, he
apparently realized that he had made a mistake when he joined the
service, and wrote to his father to get him out. His father
refused. It is also believed that his marriage with Thelma (as she
was called) was not a happy one.
Children: 1. FRED HEFNER, had no birth or baptismal record. He died young.
